Polynesian migration to Aotearoa- watch this History channel video about Polynesian travel

Here is a Hawaiian star compass. It is known that voyagers had experts on board the waka who were able to follow navigational pathways using the stars as guides. They were also able to read wave patterns and signs- such as bird and fish life. It is this knowledge that allowed two way voyaging in the Pacific. This meant that waka were able to travel to one place- and then had the ability to find their way home. This is important as it means that the islands of Polynesia were not just populated by accident.
